Pearson Edexcel GCSE Urdu 1UR0 assesses four equally weighted skills. Listening, speaking, reading and writing each contribute 25%. Every paper is offered at Foundation or Higher tier, and the student must be entered at one tier across all papers.
The four papers
| Paper | Skill | What preparation must include |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Listening | Understanding standard spoken Urdu in varied public and social contexts. |
| 2 | Speaking | A role play, picture-based task and conversation, completed in that order. |
| 3 | Reading | Varied texts plus translation from Urdu into English. |
| 4 | Writing | Open responses plus translation from English into Urdu. |
Three readiness mistakes
Using fluency as a complete diagnosis
Spoken confidence does not reveal reading precision, formal register, spelling control or translation accuracy. Use one recent task from each skill.
Practising speaking without the task sequence
The speaking assessment uses a role play, a picture-based task and a conversation. Rehearsal should develop interaction, reasons, narration and different timeframes rather than memorised speeches.
Recording scores without error types
After every task, record what caused the loss: misunderstood detail, weak method, limited language or time pressure. The next practice task should test the correction.
A balanced weekly rhythm
- One listening set with prediction, gist and detail review.
- One speaking rehearsal recorded and reviewed for development.
- One reading set with evidence and translation checks.
- One writing task reviewed for purpose, register and accuracy.
