Route: Pearson Edexcel A Level Urdu 9UR0 • Structure: three externally examined papers • Fact-checked: 7 September 2026

Pearson Edexcel A Level Urdu 9UR0 is broader than advanced language accuracy. The three papers combine translation, reading, independent research, response to literary works or film, listening and integrated source evaluation. Readiness should be scored by paper, not described simply as “strong Urdu.”

The assessment map

Paper 1

Translation, reading and research

2 hours 30 minutes · 80 marks · 40%

Urdu-to-English translation, reading comprehension and a research-based writing question.

Paper 2

Translation and works

2 hours 40 minutes · 110 marks · 30%

English-to-Urdu translation and two essays on approved literary texts or one text and one film.

Paper 3

Listening, reading and writing

2 hours 15 minutes · 60 marks · 30%

Listening comprehension plus an integrated listening, reading and evaluation task.

Paper 1: research must answer the question

A folder full of facts is not a research response. Build a source log containing the claim, evidence, date, reliability and the question it can help answer. In practice, combine relevant prior research with the unseen text instead of reproducing a prepared essay.

Paper 2: analyse works, do not retell them

Students study two discrete approved works: either two literary texts or one literary text and one film. Strong preparation organises precise references by theme, character or viewpoint and explains how technique creates meaning. Confirm the approved list in the current specification.

Paper 3: synthesise before evaluating

First identify and summarise the viewpoints in the listening and written sources separately. Then compare their reasoning and evidence before reaching a supported conclusion. Pearson recommends approximately 220-270 words for the integrated open response identified in the specification.

A practical diagnostic

  1. Complete one short translation in each direction and classify recurring errors.
  2. Write one research paragraph that uses both a source and prior research.
  3. Plan one response to an approved work using claim, reference, analysis and link.
  4. Summarise two viewpoints, then write a short evaluation under time.
  5. Choose one measurable priority for each paper.
